Design podcasts to spark your imagination

I usually consume and stay up to date with the latest design news & trends with the help of blogs, books, videos etc. and by no means would call myself an avid podcast listener. But for the past couple of months I gave this audio format a shot and actually fell in love with it. As Gary Vee says — “Audio branding is the future”, I feel like listening to a podcast is one of the most efficient ways to consume content. You can listen to it while driving, cooking food for yourself, walking down the street, and even while taking a shower.

I basically use two podcast apps as my daily drivers — Apple Podcasts & Pocket Casts. Even though there are a bunch of design podcasts out there, I personally enjoy listening to these five and once again this is purely a matter of personal preference. You can find these on your favorite podcasts app as well. So let’s dive straight into it:

1. Jake and Jonathan

Jake and Jonathan (previously Product Breakfast Club) is a behind the scenes look at how some of the best companies in the world design their products. Hosted by Jake Knapp (NY Times best-selling author of “Sprint”) and Jonathan Courtney (co-founder of AJ&Smart, the famous German design sprint agency), they team up to discuss things like product design, innovation and productivity.

Jonathan makes sure that you burst out of laughter while he shares his design experiences and rants about products that he hates using. A new episode gets released every Monday.

2. The Honest Designers Show

Another weekly podcast hosted by Tom Ross, Ian Barnard, Dustin Lee and Lisa Glanz, The Honest Designers Show aims to give you a completely honest, under the hood look at what it takes to flourish in the design field. You will discover actionable tips to land more clients, find your style and successfully brand yourself. It is really helpful for people who are just getting started and trying to explore the field of design as they provide tips that are necessary for becoming a better designer.

3. The Futur with Chris Do

How can one talk about design without mentioning the great Chris Do and his team at The Futur. Being a designer if you don’t know who he is, please come out of the rock that you are living under.

Even though the episodes don’t come out weekly, each and every episode published is top quality content just like their YouTube channel. Chris talks about branding, marketing, design, business and user experience on this podcast. Fun fact, if you are and idiot like me and use the words marketing & branding interchangeably, go listen to his episode (Marketing vs Branding) and I’m sure you’ll thank me later!

4. Design Details

Hosted by Marshall Bock and Brian Lovin, Design Details is a podcast that goes into technical specifications of design process. They talk about things such as building design teams and design systems, recent design changes in Android and iOS, career progression as a product designer and much more.

The episodes come out weekly and if you want to stay updated about the design tools and trends, this is the podcast that you should be listening to.

5. Overtime

Overtime is Dribbble’s official podcast. Season 1 was hosted by Dan Cederholm, co-founder of Dribbble. They are recently back with Season 2 and with a new host – Meg Lewis. The podcast focuses on in-depth interviews with your favorite designers and also features Dribbblers who talk about their process, the tools they use, and the stories behind their most popular shots.
